Meet the Family Part ?

Sunday we had some VERY
special guests... Papa Jerry and Janet!!! Janie's grandfather and Bubbe Janet came for the day to meet Iyla. Iyla had a GREAT time playing with her GREAT-grandfather and Janet. She basked in all of the attention and enjoyed playing and getting to know them. We all had a nice time visiting, going out to dinner, and shopping for some ADORABLE outfits for Iyla! Thank you Papa Jerry and Janet
for 'stopping by'! Please know we would love to
have you back ANY time!!!

Saturday, October 20th

Saturday was a VERY busy day for the Gustin family. We started the day visiting a craft fair and the log cabin in dowtown Hamilton.

Here are Iyla and Michael checking out their pioneer digs!!
Janie and Iyla visit with some 'fellow' pioneers-- I think we fit right in with them!!
After our history lesson, we visited Dana and her family. Here are Dana and Courtney visiting with Iyla.
Later, we joined our neighbors, the McIntyres (the BEST neighbors ANYONE could hope for!!) and their niece at a local farm where we were able to feed the animals. Iyla liked meeting the horse.
Iyla also liked feeding the donkeys. She of course enjoyed spending some time with Bob, Stephenie, and little Dina.
Later, we all headed to the nearby playground for a few trips down the slide and a few minutes in the gazebo.
What a busy day!!!

Decorating for Halloween-- In a word, Spooky!

Our family got ready for Halloween and had fun decorating our fireplace and kitchen with some 'spooky' items. Miss Iyla got into the Halloween spirit by trying on some costumes.. What do you think of Iyla as our 'resident' alien?!!

The great pumpkin

On Saturday, October 13th we took Iyla (with Mama-- Michael's grandmother) to her first pumpkin patch. We had a great time visiting with Mama and choosing the perfect pumpkins for carving. Iyla especially loved the large inflatable pumpkin!

One week Update

Well, we've been home for a whole week now - and what a week its been! We've finally gotten into a schedule and our bodies are slowly adjusting to being back in Ohio. Last night was the first night all three of us got a full night's sleep!! Iyla is sleeping through the night and is enjoying spending the day with her mommy. She also likes trips to the store, her new toys, and the pets. To celebrate, we went out to dinner tonight and Beef O'Brady's (FYI - they are a very family-friendly sports restaurant)

One question many people have been asking is what Vietnam is like? The best answer I have is that it is completely different than any other place you've been. I think the thing that amazes me is how busy Hanoi is - there is constant activity and energy. Every street is filled with things to buy, people going about their daily business, and a constant stream of two-wheeled traffic. And, yes, it is hot! Here is a typical street scene:

The most interesting thing is that, although we couldn't wait to leave, we are already looking forward to going back!! For those of you who may be travelling soon I will post some of my observations in the next few days.

We are Home!

I just wanted to post and let everybody know we arrived home safely yesterday afternoon. Since then we've been unpacking, fighting off some nasty colds (Janie and Iyla), and trying to deal with the stack of mail and pile of laundry that comes with being away for three weeks.

Its a big adjustment for us to get back to Eastern Standard time (Hanoi is 11 hours ahead) and of course, all of this is new for Iyla. (She took her first trip to Walmart today) We'll try to post some pictures soon and I have a bunch of video that needs to be uploaded.

Goodbye Vietnam

Well our time here in Vietnam is rapidly coming to a close. We have some mixed feelings as we leave. We are THRILLED to be returning to the States, to the most wonderful place in the world-- HOME!! We are happy to be able to introduce Iyla to her adoring family and friends. However, this journey home is a bit bitter-sweet. We had a lovely time in Vietnam and look forward to coming back someday. We greatly enjoyed being over here and going through this experience with our friends (who now feel like family)- some old friends and some new ones. We will miss having casual lunches and leisurely strolls through the lobby in which we run into someone we know. We are also sad to be taking Iyla out of the only country she has called home. At the same time, we know Iyla will have a sunny future in the USA. It will be quite an adjustment back at home for all of us but it is one we greatly look forward to.
So, goodbye Vietnam and goodbye all--- see you on the other side-- USA here we come !!! :)

Tuesday October 2nd

Today was the day of our second visa appointment at the US embassy. We dressed Iyla in her USA patriotic gear for the occasion. Thanks Mom for the outfit!! Iyla also had her last playdate in Vietnam with Courtney (Dana's daughter) as they leave this evening for HOME!! We also had a little time to visit the playroom before the appointment this afternoon. The appointment was very fast and the visa is paid for. So, we will be picking it up tomorrow at 4pm at the embassy before heading to catch our evening flight.

Monday October 1st

Monday was a very quiet day for us... we worked on our travel plans and did a little touring around Hanoi. Above are a few shots of the opera house. We FINISHED our shopping (really-- this time we are DONE!) We also had a nice get together with our friends--- our last little party as most of the group is leaving today (Tuesday) and tomorrow.

Travel Plans

Well, we visited the Cathay Pacific counter in our hotel's lobby and were able to change our flights. We will be leaving Vietnam on Wednesday evening at 7:10pm and will be arriving on US soil (LAX) at 9:50pm on October 3rd. Basically, we re-gain the day that was lost when we flew over the International dateline on the way here. After customs, we will head to the Best Western Airpark Hotel for a few short hours before continuing on our journey to CVG. Our flight to Cincinnati leaves LAX at 7:05am and we will be arriving at 2:24pm on Thursday afternoon (EST). So, we will be coming home about 2 days early!! YAY!! :)

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we attempt all of the crazy flight times, navigate foreign airport terminals, and go through customs-- all with Iyla!!!

We can't wait to be home and are looking very forward to everyone meeting our Iyla. We are sure you will love her!!!
